The Power of Using Voice Notes (the app)

If you’re on social media, TikTok specifically, then I’m almost certain that you’ve heard the term ‘yapping’. Dependent upon the creator you follow, or the one who comes across your timeline, the proper way to pronounce this word is yappin’. Just simply drop the “g”.

I first heard the term when influencer, Kev On Stage, positively mentioned two other creatives for getting online and just talking. He was surprised by how there were creators, nowadays, creating content from authentically just talking.

Now, does everyone yap with wisdom? Not even. However, there is power in yapping and let me tell you why.

In 2019, I had just got back on social media after a year’s hiatus. I took time to heal from a trauma that had just been shared with my family. I got back to church. I found a community. I had even unlocked a new gift. Well, two. One being writing, and the other being speaking.

During my hiatus, I decided to open the voice note app and just talk. This decision was a result of not being able to write fast enough with the pace of my thoughts. I thought this was anxiety. To my surprise, it wasn’t. At the time, typing my thoughts wasn’t considered. So, I spoke.

I would drive and just talk. It was therapeutic. It helped me embrace my voice and its inflation when met with passion. Fast forward to 2025, I still talk to my voice note app. I have over 1000 voice notes ranging from three minutes to fifty-four minutes long.

Now, this was not a segway into a podcast announcement. LOL.

Each voice note provided clarity to a situation I had been facing. Some voice notes were prayers to God in conversation form. Some were filled with ideas that I would later go on to execute. Some were me simply documenting an exciting moment.

The point being is that there is power in using that voice note app. If you’re not a journaling type of person, talk! Open your app and just yap!

Baby, that voice note app does have a little oil on it if you choose to see it differently.

Don’t think about proper noun-verb agreement. Don’t think about proper articulation. Just keep on yapping. Why?

You’ll learn to stop oversharing with others. You’ll learn how to get within yourself and actually listen to that still small voice. It’s also a great way to break out of your comfort zone.

Either way, use your voice and speak.

You were never meant to be silent nor silenced.

Yess! Love making VN, I used to do the same for years. I periodically go back and listen and I always find gems and get clarity. It’s beautiful, 10/10 recommendation!
