Dear Friend,
Many don't know that the concept of the breath of God is woven into Scripture from the very beginning, revealing important truths about who we are and the authority we carry as believers. To be clear, when we talk about God’s breath in the Kingdom context, we’re not merely discussing the act of breathing life into Adam; we’re uncovering a foundational principle of empowerment that shapes our identity and purpose.
Building on Monday's live teaching, this post will explore how the Breath of God empowers us to walk in dominion, and Holy Spirit’s crucial role in this divine empowerment.
The Breath of God: Life and Dominion in One
In Genesis 2:7, God breathes life into Adam, transforming dust into a living being. The Hebrew word used here is Neshamah (נשמה), which translates to the inspiration, intellect, and breath of life. Of course, this breath doesn’t just animate Adam’s body; it endows him with a distinct purpose and authority. God knew that Adam needed the Breath of God to
set humanity apart to rule, cultivate, and bring order to creation.
We see Adam's need for the breath to fulfill his Genesis 1:28 mandate to “be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion…” (Genesis 1:28). We must also understand that this dominion isn’t simply about control but carrying God’s authority to bring His will to bear on the earth.
Through God’s Neshamah, we, too, are called to walk in Kingdom authority, bringing Heaven’s values and realities to our world.
How God’s Breath Functions to Empower Us
The Breath of God carries a spiritual and functional authority, which means that it’s both life-giving and power-bestowing. When God breathes into us, He imparts a divine power that enables us to bring life, growth, and order wherever we go. This same breath later empowers Old Testament figures throughout the Bible—prophets, kings, and disciples alike—to fulfill God’s plans.
However, this empowerment requires alignment with God’s purpose.
Essentially, Just as Adam walked with God and from that place of intimacy named creation, we’re also called to align our hearts, minds, and words with God’s will. When we do, His breath in us is activated, and we’re empowered to bring Kingdom realities into our territory.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is central to understanding the Breath of God. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks to His disciples about the Helper who would come, referring to Holy Spirit as God's continuing breath, life, and power within believers. After His resurrection, Jesus breathes on His disciples, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22). Here, we see a direct connection between the Breath of God and the indwelling power of Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit’s role is more than just providing comfort or insight; He empowers us with God’s authority, enabling us to walk in dominion. If Jesus tells His disciples to "receive," we should then ask ourselves when we lost him.
At what point in history did we have Him, lose Him, and now have to get Him again?
Short answer: We had Him within us at creation (God breathes Him into us), lost Him within us with the fall of man in the Garden of Eden (which is why He had to come upon people in the Old Testament), and now Jesus encourages everyone to accept Him back into our bodies. Therefore, through the Spirit, we receive guidance, conviction, strength, and the gifts necessary to fulfill our purpose.
I suggest that it's the Spirit who empowers our words with the authority of Heaven and gives us the courage and boldness to speak and act as ambassadors of Christ.
Walking in Dominion Through the Breath of God
Ultimately, when we understand that the Breath of God empowers us for dominion, it changes the way we see our role as Kingdom citizens. We’re not merely passive participants in faith but active agents of God’s Kingdom on earth. Moreover, when Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,” its alluding to the fact that our words carry weight because the Spirit empowers them within us.
Why I Wrote Words and Authority
For years, I felt like I was missing something. For instance, the promises of abundance, power, and Kingdom living felt like distant concepts, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d been lied to—or at least not told the whole truth.
That frustration drove me to start studying the Bible for myself, and what I discovered was liberating. Through my study of the Kingdom, I learned that God’s promises are real, His authority is available, and the power of our words is the key to unlocking it all.
That journey led to the writing of Words and Authority, a book designed to help believers like you step into the fullness of your Kingdom identity and walk in divine power.
