Finding Yourself Again: How Faith Can Guide You When You're Feeling Lost

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I knew something was off with me. Having just turned 40, I thought maybe it was perimenopause. But after educating myself, I realized that could be AN answer, but it wasn’t THE answer. Next, I thought it had to do with my profession or my finances. Both of which were things that I was working on improving, but something was still just… “off”.
I went to a group meeting at my church, and the facilitating clinician suggested that what I was experiencing was depression. And that was when I found THE answer. Immediately following the group session, we moved to Bible study with the entire congregation. My pastor preached a sermon that spoke directly to me. The topic was what to do when we are having a crisis of belief in our spirit, soul, or body. The lesson came from Philippians 4:4-9. I share these things below to help you through your own crisis.
1. BECOME A HABITUAL REJOICER!
Philippians 4:4a-c NLT - Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!
2. DEVELOP A PERSONAL CULTURE OF BEING MODERATE/CONSIDERATE!
Philippians 4:5a NLT - Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
3. REMEMBER, DON’T ALLOW YOUR MEMORY TO BECOME DELUDED BY DELUSION!
Philippians 4:5b-c NLT - Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
4. STOP TALKING TO THE ENEMY, START TALKING TO GOD!
Philippians 4:6a-c NLT - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
5. BE SELF-REVEALING, NOT SELF-CONCEALING WITH GOD!
Philippians 4:6d NLT - Tell God what you need…
6. CULTIVATE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!
Philippians 4:6e NLT…and thank him for all he has done.
7. TRUSTING GOD IS THE WOMB THROUGH WHICH HIS PEACE IS BIRTHED IN OUR HEARTS AND MINDS.
Philippians 4:7a NLT - Then you will experience God’s peace,
8. HIS PEACE COMES ONLY FROM HIM, AND HIS PEACE IS THE PEACE YOU NEED!
Philippians 4:7b NLT - which exceeds anything we can understand.
9. DON’T JUST EMPLOY BUT ALSO DEPLOY YOUR GUARD!
Philippians 4:7c-d, NLT - His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
10. BE INTENTIONAL WITH YOUR THINKING!
Philippians 4:8 a-l NLT - And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
11. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE WHAT YOU KNOW!
Philippians 4:9a-e NLT - Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. We have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
Friend, I implore you to identify which point you need to focus on the most in your current set of circumstances. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you right where you are. Your strength isn’t going to get you back on track. But God’s strength will. Now, your issue may not be depression, but whatever it is that you are struggling with, don’t let it take you out.
